The northern Chicago suburb of Glencoe is a great area for cyclists because it connects several bike trails, has a metra train station, and has interesting destinations nearby such as the Chicago Botanic Garden, the Ravinia Festival outdoor concert venue, beaches, the Skokie Lagoons, and more.

The downloadable PDF above provides maps for gettig from Montrose Beach on the Lakefront Trail to Glencoe using mostly the North Shore Channel Trail, the Green Bay Trail, and some residential streets.

Other bike trails near Glencoe include the North Branch Trail (can be used to get from Chicago's north side to the Chicago Botanic Garden), the Skokie Valley Bike Path, and the Robert McClory Bike Path that goes to Wisconsin.

If you like having an activity for a trip from Chicago to the Glencoe area, the warm months feature farmer's markets along the bike route, such as the Winnetka Farmer's Market. Certain beaches, like Highland Park's Rosewood Beach, can be a good option (daily admission is $10 as of 2024). The Skokie Lagoons offer kayak and canoe rentals. You can ride and walk through portions of the Chicago Botanic Garden area for free if you avoid a parking fee by riding a bike, although the main areas of the garden have an admission fee.
