It's possible to bike from the southern end of the Lakefront trail in Chicago's Southshore neighborhood to Whiting, Indiana. Whiting has some nice bike trails along Lake Michigan and around Wolf Lake, and it has several interesting destinations such as beaches, parks, breweries, the Horseshoe Casino, the Mascot Hall of Fame, and the BP oil refinery. Whiting is also along a route the leads to longer bike trails in Indiana such as the Erie Lackawanna Trail and the Oak Savannah Trail.
The downloadable PDF above provides maps and directions to get from the Lakefront Trail to Whiting. The northern part of the route is mostly on-street bike lanes and the southern part starting at Calumet Park is mostly off-street bike trails. Along or near the route are several landmarks including the South Works steel mill site, Calumet Fisheries (in-house smoked seafood), the 95th street bridge (made famous by The Blues Brothers film), the Illinois-Indiana boundary marker, and more.
